Make sure your feeder itself has lots of Red to attract the Hummingbirds. It has been suspected of possibly causing harm to Hummingbirds. It is not necessary or recommended to use red food coloring. You can cover the bottle with red cellophane or even red ribbons. Glass feeder bottles do not collect as much mold as those made of plastic. Invest in a curved bottle brush that can reach all parts of your feeders it's also useful to have a pipe cleaner or small brush that will fit into the feeder holes. A mild solution of white vinegar may be used to kill mold in feeders for week-to-week cleaning. Make sure you thoroughly clean your feeders when filling. It's also recommended to thoroughly clean and sterilize the feeder each time you refill to ensure the health of your hummingbirds. Change or fill feeder every 3-7 days depending on the temperature and clarity of your food. This means the yeasts are growing and starting fermentation which will harm hummingbirds. If your hummingbird food in your storage bottle or feeder gets cloudy, or you see a grey or green mold on the bottom, discard immediately. You can store in 2 liter soda bottles for easy storage and filling of your feeders. If you can changing every 3-4 days is ideal. Scale this recipe for the amount of Hummingbird Food you need for a week. Food is good under refrigeration for a week. Only put the amount of food that is being drained by the Hummingbirds. Food will spoil in 5-7 days, quicker in high heat. Add sugar and stir until thoroughly disolved. Then let cool, but make sure it is still hot enough to fully dissolve Sugar. To sterilize, Bring water to rolling boil in a sauce pan.
